If there were any doubt remaining about Mehdi Karroubi’s fate, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ezhei, Iran’s chief prosecutor, has now made it clear: “Charges against Mehdi Karroubi will be addressed,” he said.
In an interview with the hard-line newspaper, Kayhan, Ezhei promised to deal with all those involved in recent riots in the country. According to Ezhei, who previously served as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s minister of intelligence, Karroubi should stand trial before the Special Court of Clergy, a court set up years ago by the late Ayatollah Khomeini to deal with crimes committed by members of the clergy.
Ezhei, who headed the Special Court of Clergy before serving as minister of intelligence, added, “The judicial system will deal with the sedition that took place after the June election as it deems appropriate.”
Earlier, Karroubi, a reformist candidate in Iran’s June 12 presidential election, had accused the government of torture and sexual abuse in its notorious prisons. Karroubi’s accusations provoked harsh reactions by Iran’s hard-liners. They accused Karroubi of having aided the enemies of the Iranian regime – defined by Iran’s leaders as the United States, Britain, France and Israel — by accusing the Islamic Republic of rape and torture.
